As far as general core classes go: Power core engineer does around 35k dps which is respectable (more than power mech). Core warrior is viable as both a dps and quickness provider. Condi core ranger should be ~30k dps and has the option to run alacrity. Core rev should also be close to 30k.
For PVE I'd say Renegade is a great choice. Revenant overall is probably the best class right now because it has strong DPS builds as well as a strong Quickness and Alacrity build (Renegade is the alacrity build). Renegade is also strong in Open World and the Condition Vindicator build is basically unkillable. 1.
Elementalist - top dps in the game, has easier time getting into groups compared to other DPS classes. Guardian/Engineer - top tier dps and much easier to play than elementalist. 2) PvP: Mesmers - Overpowered as of right now. Necros - was always top tier in spvp and wvw but looked down on in pve.
The two main reasons are: Lots of utility. Revenants are unique in that they get access to two sets of utility skills (including heal and elite) on top of the weapon swap. You choose two legends out of a possible five for a given elite spec, and each legend comes with their own set of utility skills.

Charr: warrior and engineer cuz they like fucking shit up. Asura:engineer and necromancer cuz they like building shit up. Silvari: ranger cuz they like meeting nature shits. necromancer because they are too young to know that shit is evil. and mesmer because well living world spoilers and shit.
Revenant is just really cool theme wise, and you get to use dragon skills as herald! And toggleable auras too. Then renegade is a more active support role and now vindicator, this has been one of my favorite classes ever in a video game. And now we get a stealthy healer and it's really great, so much fun to play with.
Class advice. [Discussion] About to jump into GW2 and I'm looking for class advice. I'd like to be mostly melee focused. I'm a competent gamer, but wouldn't mind starting with an "easy" class to help my learning curve. Also, I'll probably focus on solo open world play until I really get a feel for things. 24.
Engineer. 3 power builds: Scrapper, Holosmith, Mechanist. All 3 can share the same gear except for the weapons. 2 condition builds: condi mech and condi holo if you wanna play the piano. 2 offensive support builds: power alac mech and power quick scrapper. Can share the same gear with a few trinket adjustments.
For your second question, GW2’s PvP is incredibly accessible. You’re able to start PvPing with a level 2 character (i.e. immediately after finishing the tutorial). There’s an option to teleport to the PvP lobby from virtually anywhere. Almost everything is immediately unlocked, which is why people give advice to go to the PvP lobby to try
14 Olmpain1 OP • 1 yr. ago So the classes aren't separate into the classic DPS, Tank, and Support roles? 2 ciove57 • 1 yr. ago • Edited 1 yr. ago No. All the classes can dps or support in some kind of way. There is no tank or healer per se. The main roles (on pve endgame content) are dps, support.
When gw2 was released almost all classes were sort of roaming tanky classes. They have added elite specs to give each class something more specific. For instance: a ranger can be a druid or a soulbeast. Druids are top of the line boon givers/healers. Soulbeast has an incredible burst. So you can do both with just ranger.
